My grandmother was Ollie Lee and her daughter, Naomi Ruth, was my Mother.
Mother was an artist, a sewer, gardener, teacher, homemaker, wife and mom to four children. She dressed me in clothing that she stitched--and sometimes designed--herself. My clothes were beautiful: sweater sets, lined suits, matched-plaid coats with leather buttons, and, of course, chiffon, tulle, satin and velvet for proms and church. She taught me, when people said, "Oh, what a beautiful dress (shirt, blouse, pants, sweater) to reply, "Thank you. My Mother made it."
In Ollie's Girls I'll be sharing photos, sewing techniques and sewing patterns that--I hope--encourage you both to share ideas with me and to make something beautiful.
My work is newly honed and, like all arts, continues to change. Currently, I am sewing with vintage/heirloom fabrics. The beautiful items that our mothers and grandmothers embroidered, sewed, and laundered to make homes for their families find new life in these designs. I hope that you enjoy them!
After all, your nieces and daughters and granddaughters will also love to say, "Thank you. My Mother Made it."
